Ces derni\u00e8res sont alors op\u00e9r\u00e9es par des ferries de seconde main, soutenus par l&rsquo;affr\u00e8tement de fr\u00e9teurs durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la demande. La construction de deux navires plus capacitaires permettrait donc \u00e0 <strong>Brittany Ferries<\/strong> de r\u00e9aliser d&rsquo;importantes \u00e9conomies op\u00e9rationnelles, chacun de ces deux navires pouvant en remplacer deux autres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour la ligne Caen &#8211; Portsmouth, une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9conomie mixte, la <strong>Senacal<\/strong>, existe depuis 1986 pour financer le nouveau ferry. Pour le futur navire de la ligne de Cherbourg, la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00c9quipement Naval de la Manche (Senamanche) est cr\u00e9\u00e9e en avril 1990. Il est alors pr\u00e9vu de construire deux sister-ships. Alors que les Chantiers de l&rsquo;Atlantique ont un carnet de commande remplis, c&rsquo;est avec les chantiers finlandais <em>Kv\u00e6rner Masa-Yards<\/em> que le contrat est sign\u00e9, le 17 mai 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toutefois, les chantiers <em>Kv\u00e6rner Masa-Yards<\/em> n&rsquo;ont la capacit\u00e9 de construire qu&rsquo;un seul des deux ferries projet\u00e9s par Brittany Ferries. D\u00e9cision est prise de prioriser celui de la ligne Caen &#8211; Portsmouth, qui deviendra <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/28\/m-v-normandie-1992-2025-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Normandie (1992-2025) | Brittany Ferries\">Normandie<\/a><\/strong>. Pendant ce temps, <em>Claude Lenoir<\/em> (un officier de <strong>Truckline<\/strong>), <em>Michel Maraval<\/em> (le chef architecte naval) et <em>Christian Michielini<\/em> (directeur d&rsquo;armement) engagent la conception d&rsquo;un navire plus petit pour la ligne de Cherbourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8230;\u00e0 un ferry d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 la ligne Cherbourg &#8211; Poole<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;hiver 1990, <em>Claude Lenoir<\/em>, <em>Michel Maraval<\/em> et <em>Christian Michelini<\/em> visitent un chantier norv\u00e9gien qui se propose pour construire le navire de 142 m\u00e8tres con\u00e7u pour la ligne de Cherbourg. Cependant, ils s&rsquo;\u00e9tonnent que le chantier ne dispose pas d&rsquo;une cale s\u00e8che de cette longueur. Ils repartent du chantier sans formaliser la commande, prenant la direction de Turku pour une r\u00e9union de chantier relative \u00e0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/28\/m-v-normandie-1992-2025-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Normandie (1992-2025) | Brittany Ferries\">Normandie<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lors de cette r\u00e9union, les repr\u00e9sentants de <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/29\/brittany-ferries-lhistoire-depuis-1973\/\" title=\"Brittany Ferries | L\u2019histoire depuis 1973\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong> apprennent que <em>Masa-Yards<\/em> s&rsquo;appr\u00eate \u00e0 construire la coque d&rsquo;un ferry de 142 m\u00e8tres de long, pour le compte du m\u00eame chantier norv\u00e9gien qu&rsquo;ils viennent de visiter. Cette coque n&rsquo;est autre que celle du futur navire de Truckline. Les repr\u00e9sentants de <strong>Brittany Ferries<\/strong> entreprennent donc de convaincre <em>Masa Yards<\/em> de mener la construction du car-ferry dans son int\u00e9gralit\u00e9, ce que le chantier finit par accepter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La construction de la coque 485 d\u00e9bute \u00e0 Helsinki en mars 1991. Celle-ci avance vite : le bulbe est pos\u00e9 le 19 juin 1991 et la coque finalis\u00e9e est lanc\u00e9e le 26 juillet 1991. Brittany Ferries pr\u00e9voit alors d&rsquo;inaugurer son nouveau ferry en janvier 1992. Toutefois, les essais en mer de l&rsquo;automne 1991 montrent que la flottaison du nouveau navire est insuffisante au regard du port-en-lourd souhait\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brittany Ferries<\/strong> prend donc la d\u00e9cision d&rsquo;ins\u00e9rer une section de 9 m\u00e8tres au milieu du navire. Le 22 d\u00e9cembre 1991, le car-ferry retourne donc en cale-s\u00e8che pour \u00eatre coup\u00e9 en deux et allong\u00e9. Il appareille d\u00e8s le lendemain pour Cherbourg, o\u00f9 il est baptis\u00e9 <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> le 4 avril 1992 par Francine Agiton, \u00e9pouse du pr\u00e9sident du conseil d\u00e9partemental de la Manche. Dans la foul\u00e9e de son inauguration, <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> op\u00e8re sa premi\u00e8re travers\u00e9e vers Poole, rempla\u00e7ant les navires <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/19\/m-v-corbiere-ex-benodet-1984-1990-brittany-ferries-channel-islands-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Corbi\u00e8re (ex-Benodet) (1984 \u2013 1990) \u2013 Brittany Ferries \/ Channel Islands Ferries\">Corbi\u00e8re<\/a><\/strong> et <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/26\/m-v-tregastel-1985-1991-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Tr\u00e9gastel (1985-1991) | Brittany Ferries\">Tr\u00e9gastel<\/a><\/strong>. Il est alors le plus gros navire \u00e0 avoir jamais visit\u00e9 le port de Poole, dans lequel d&rsquo;importants travaux de dragage ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durant sa premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e de service, <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> accueille \u00e0 son bord 400 000 passagers, 100 000 voitures et 50 000 poids-lourds. Il est op\u00e9r\u00e9 en tandem avec le <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/20\/m-v-coutances-1978-2007-truckline-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Coutances (1978-2007) \u2013 Truckline &amp; Brittany Ferries\">Coutances<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durant l&rsquo;hiver 1997, <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> assure une travers\u00e9e hebdomadaire entre Poole et Santander, reprenant le service op\u00e9r\u00e9 pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment par <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/27\/m-v-bretagne\/\" title=\"M\/V Bretagne (1989 \u2013 2024) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Bretagne<\/a><\/strong> depuis Portsmouth. Le certificat passager de <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> est abaiss\u00e9 \u00e0 200 personnes sur ce service, dont l&rsquo;objectif principal est de tester le potentiel sur le trafic fret. Le service est renouvel\u00e9 durant l&rsquo;hiver 1998-1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1999, <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/29\/brittany-ferries-lhistoire-depuis-1973\/\" title=\"Brittany Ferries | L\u2019histoire depuis 1973\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> fait dispara\u00eetre la marque <strong>Truckline<\/strong>, repeignant d\u00e8s lors <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> dans ses couleurs. Le nouveau ferry &#8211; baptis\u00e9 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/04\/m-v-cotentin-2007-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Cotentin (2007) | Brittany Ferries\">Cotentin<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; entre en service le 26 novembre 2007, devenant le nouveau partenaire de <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> sur la ligne Cherbourg &#8211; Poole. <strong>Cotentin<\/strong> dispose d&rsquo;un lin\u00e9raire de garage deux fois plus important que son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, une capacit\u00e9 mise \u00e0 profit sur une, puis deux \u00e0 compter de 2009, rotation vers Santander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 la fin des op\u00e9rations de <strong>P&amp;O Ferries<\/strong>, la ligne Cherbourg &#8211; Poole est d\u00e9ficitaire \u00e0 partir de 2004. Les difficult\u00e9s s&rsquo;accroissent \u00e0 compter de 2009, lorsque <strong>Celtic Link Ferries<\/strong> inaugure son plus propre service entre Cherbourg et Portsmouth, avec le ferry <strong>Norman Voyager<\/strong>. Au m\u00eame moment, <strong><strong>Brittany Ferries<\/strong><\/strong> est confront\u00e9 \u00e0 d&rsquo;importantes difficult\u00e9s financi\u00e8res, li\u00e9es \u00e0 la chute du cours de la livre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2010, <strong>Brittany Ferries<\/strong> se r\u00e9sout donc \u00e0 d\u00e9sarmer <strong>Barfleur<\/strong>. Pour cette saison, le service depuis Cherbourg est par <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/23\/m-v-cap-finistere-2010-2021-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Cap Finist\u00e8re (2010 \u2013 2021) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Cap Finist\u00e8re<\/a><\/strong> (trois rotations hebdomadaires vers Portsmouth), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/04\/hsc-condor-voyager-2005-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"HSC Voyager (2005) | Brittany Ferries\">Normandie Express<\/a><\/strong> (une rotation quotidienne vers Portsmouth), <strong><strong>Cotentin<\/strong><\/strong> et <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/22\/hsc-condor-vitesse-1998-2015-condor-ferries\/\" title=\"HSC Condor Vitesse (1998-2015) | Condor Ferries\">Condor Vitesse<\/a><\/strong> (entre une et trois rotations vers Poole).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le service de <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> est r\u00e9tabli d\u00e8s l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2011, alors que celui de <strong>Cap Finist\u00e8re<\/strong> vers Portsmouth est supprim\u00e9. Afin de r\u00e9duire ses co\u00fbts d&rsquo;exploitation, sa brasserie (<em>Les Dunes<\/em>) et son salon de th\u00e9 (<em>L&rsquo;Arc en Ciel<\/em>) sont supprim\u00e9s leur d&rsquo;un arr\u00eat technique aux chantiers ARNO de Dunkerque. Le certificat passager de <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> est \u00e9galement r\u00e9duit, de 1 212 \u00e0 900 passagers. Cependant, ces modifications ne suffisent pas \u00e0 redresser la rentabilit\u00e9 de la ligne et <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> est \u00e0 nouveau d\u00e9sarm\u00e9 d\u00e8s la fin de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une bref carri\u00e8re dans le d\u00e9troit de Calais<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e9but-2012, le consortium <strong>LD Lines<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>DFDS<\/strong> annonce affr\u00e9ter <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> pour assurer des travers\u00e9es entre Calais et Douvres durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2012. Dans le sillage de la faillite de <strong>SeaFrance<\/strong>, cette alliance cherche ainsi \u00e0 s&rsquo;implanter durablement sur cette ligne et compte sur <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> pour accro\u00eetre ses fr\u00e9quences. Adapt\u00e9 aux sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s des ports desservis et renomm\u00e9 <strong>Deal Seaways<\/strong>, le navire entame son service commercial le 21 avril 2012. Cependant, sa man\u0153uvrabilit\u00e9 et l&rsquo;acc\u00e8s \u00e0 son garage par mar\u00e9e basse posent quelques enjeux pour une exploitation p\u00e9renne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 la fin de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2012, l&rsquo;opinion &#8211; redoutant la suppression d\u00e9finitive du port de Cherbourg de la carte des services de <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/29\/brittany-ferries-lhistoire-depuis-1973\/\" title=\"Brittany Ferries | L\u2019histoire depuis 1973\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> &#8211; contraint l&rsquo;armateur a annoncer la r\u00e9int\u00e9gration de <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> au sein de sa flotte. Apr\u00e8s remise en \u00e9tat par <strong>DFDS<\/strong>, <strong>Barfleur<\/strong> reprend son service Cherbourg &#8211; Poole, all\u00e9g\u00e9 \u00e0 un aller-retour quotidien, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2013.
