Il r\u00e9alise sa travers\u00e9e inaugurale le 24 janvier 1974. Sa capacit\u00e9 de 250 passagers contribue au succ\u00e8s de la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Plymouth, pour laquelle il devint rapidement trop petit. Par la suite, <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est essentiellement utilis\u00e9 au d\u00e9part de Saint-Malo durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le navire est revendu en 1984 \u00e0 un armateur balte, mais est rapidement transf\u00e9r\u00e9 dans la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e \u00e0 la faveur de la faillite de son propri\u00e9taire. Il terminera sa carri\u00e8re autour de la p\u00e9ninsule Arabique et est d\u00e9mantel\u00e9 en 2004 en Inde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est un terme breton signifiant le bout du monde. La premi\u00e8re travers\u00e9e a lieu le 2 janvier 1973, au lendemain de l&rsquo;entr\u00e9e du Royaume-Uni dans le march\u00e9 commun europ\u00e9en.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le premier navire de la compagnie, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/03\/m-v-kerisnel-1973-1974-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Kerisnel (1973-1974) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Kerisnel<\/a><\/strong> dispose d&rsquo;am\u00e9nagements passagers sommaires. Cependant, les fondateurs de la <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">BAI<\/a><\/strong> per\u00e7oivent d\u00e8s ses d\u00e9buts un potentiel de trafic passager pour la ligne la plus occidentale de la Manche. D\u00e8s octobre 1972, un roulier mixte de 103 m\u00e8tres de long et capable d&rsquo;accueillir 250 passagers est pass\u00e9e aux chantiers de la Palice, \u00e0 la Rochelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e9nomm\u00e9 <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong>, ce navire est attendu pour la fin de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1973. En attendant, la <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">BAI<\/a><\/strong> exp\u00e9rimente durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 1973 un service passager op\u00e9r\u00e9 par le paquebot <strong>Pos\u00e9idon<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Penn-Ar-Bed, un navire pr\u00e9curseur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La quille de <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est pos\u00e9e le 30 octobre 1972 et le navire est lanc\u00e9 le 17 mai 1973. Sa livraison, retard\u00e9e par une gr\u00e8ve des ouvriers, intervient le 19 janvier 1974 \u00e0 la <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">BAI<\/a><\/strong>. Sa premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e de service est un succ\u00e8s qui incite la compagnie \u00e0 affr\u00e9ter un deuxi\u00e8me roulier mixte en pr\u00e9vision de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 1975. Cependant, le bilan de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1974 est terni par des d\u00e9faillances m\u00e9caniques qui imposent un car\u00e9nage prolong\u00e9 en octobre 1974, apr\u00e8s la vente de <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/03\/m-v-kerisnel-1973-1974-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Kerisnel (1973-1974) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Kerisnel<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est remplac\u00e9 durant cette p\u00e9riode par le roulier <strong>Val\u00e9rie<\/strong>, d\u00e9pourvu de toute installation passagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le succ\u00e8s de la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Plymouth incite trois armateurs \u00e0 se positionner pour cr\u00e9er une nouvelle ligne dans la Manche occidentale. En effet, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de la <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">BAI<\/a><\/strong>, la Bretagne \u00e9tait d\u00e9pourvue de ligne vers l&rsquo;Angleterre depuis la fermeture de la ligne Saint-Malo &#8211; Southampton par British Rail en 1964. Collection Brittany Ferries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Afin d&rsquo;occuper l&rsquo;espace, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong> engage <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> sur une nouvelle ligne Saint-Malo &#8211; Plymouth \u00e0 compter d&rsquo;ao\u00fbt 1975, laissant <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/22\/m-v-prince-de-bretagne-1975-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Prince de Bretagne (1975) | Brittany Ferries\">Prince de Bretagne<\/a><\/strong> seul sur la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Plymouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Penn-Ar-Bed, un navire finist\u00e9rien pour la Bretagne orientale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour la saison 1976, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong> affr\u00e8te <strong>Bonanza<\/strong>, un ferry con\u00e7u pour les courtes travers\u00e9es diurnes, pour op\u00e9rer en tandem avec <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Plymouth. Cependant, l&rsquo;\u00e9chouage d&rsquo;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/24\/m-v-armorique-1-1976-1992-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Armorique (1) (1976-1992) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Armorique<\/a><\/strong> \u00e0 l&rsquo;entr\u00e9e de Saint-Malo le 5 juillet 1976 entra\u00eene le transfert <strong>Bonanza<\/strong> sur la ligne Saint-Malo &#8211; Portsmouth. Cependant, ses am\u00e9nagements se r\u00e9v\u00e8lent inadapt\u00e9s pour ce service, comprenant une travers\u00e9e nocturne de 9 heures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 15 ao\u00fbt, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong> pr\u00e9voit donc le transfert de <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> vers Saint-Malo qui, en d\u00e9pit de sa plus petite capacit\u00e9, dispose d&rsquo;une capacit\u00e9 de couchage plus importante. Du mardi soir au vendredi matin, <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> op\u00e8re la ligne Saint-Malo &#8211; Portsmouth en compl\u00e9ment d&rsquo;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/24\/m-v-armorique-1-1976-1992-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Armorique (1) (1976-1992) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Armorique<\/a><\/strong>, avec quatre travers\u00e9es Saint-Malo &#8211; Plymouth les vendredi, lundi et mardi pour se repositionner entre les deux lignes. \u00c0 compter de 1978, <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est \u00e9galement missionn\u00e9 pour les d\u00e9buts et fins de saison de la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Cork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un navire redondant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fin-juin 1979, <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est immobilis\u00e9 par une d\u00e9faillance m\u00e9canique qui frappe \u00e9galement <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/19\/m-v-cornouailles-1977-1989-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Cornouailles (1977-1989) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Cornouailles<\/a><\/strong> puis <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/19\/m-v-prince-of-brittany-1978-1992-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Prince of Brittany (1978-1992) | Brittany Ferries\">Prince of Brittany<\/a><\/strong> durant le printemps 1979. Les mauvais r\u00e9sultats de la saison 1981 contraignent <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> \u00e0 le mettre en vente au d\u00e9but de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1982. <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong> est cependant r\u00e9activ\u00e9 en janvier 1983, pour compenser l&rsquo;affr\u00e8tement de <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/19\/m-v-cornouailles-1977-1989-brittany-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Cornouailles (1977-1989) \u2013 Brittany Ferries\">Cornouailles<\/a><\/strong> par la <strong>SNCF<\/strong> pour service entre Dieppe et Newhaven. N\u00e9anmoins, le minist\u00e8re des transports britanniques refuse de lui d\u00e9livrer un certificat d&rsquo;exploitation, pr\u00e9alable \u00e0 ce service. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/19\/m-v-corbiere-ex-benodet-1984-1990-brittany-ferries-channel-islands-ferries\/\" title=\"M\/V Corbi\u00e8re (ex-Benodet) (1984 \u2013 1990) \u2013 Brittany Ferries \/ Channel Islands Ferries\">Benodet<\/a><\/strong>, affr\u00e9t\u00e9 durant l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 1984 pour la ligne Roscoff &#8211; Plymouth sera donc finalement choisi pour ce nouveau service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une nouvelle carri\u00e8re loin du Finist\u00e8re<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En avril 1984, <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breizh-ferries.com\/index.php\/brittany-ferries\/\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> parvint enfin \u00e0 vendre <strong>Penn-Ar-Bed<\/strong>, \u00e0 la compagnie nouvellement cr\u00e9\u00e9e <strong>Sweden-Norway Linjen Ab<\/strong>. Renomm\u00e9 <strong>Sveno Marina<\/strong>, il est affect\u00e9 \u00e0 une nouvelle ligne reliant Str\u00f6mstad (Su\u00e8de) \u00e0 Langesund (Norv\u00e8ge) \u00e0 compter du 12 avril 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 la faveur de la faillite de son propri\u00e9taire, <strong>Marlines<\/strong> acquiert le navire en octobre 1984 et le fait moderniser. Une superstructure est cr\u00e9\u00e9e sur sa poupe, permettant d&rsquo;accro\u00eetre sa jauge \u00e0 835 passagers. Renomm\u00e9 <strong>Princess M<\/strong>, le navire est engag\u00e9 sur la ligne Patras &#8211; Igoumenista (Gr\u00e8ce). <strong>Princess M<\/strong> op\u00e8re ce service jusqu&rsquo;en d\u00e9cembre 1989, lorsqu&rsquo;il est acquis par <strong>Alimar SRL<\/strong> qui le renomme <strong>Lilly R<\/strong>. Op\u00e9r\u00e9 sous la marque <strong>Rodriquez<\/strong>, le navire relie les ports de Livourne (Italie) \u00e0 Barcelone (Espagne), via Naples (Italie) et Tunis (Tunisie). La ligne est par la suite modifi\u00e9e pour desservir les \u00eeles italiennes de Lipari et Millazzo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rodriquez<\/strong> op\u00e8re <strong>Lilly R<\/strong> jusqu&rsquo;en 1993, lorsque le navire est d\u00e9sarm\u00e9 dans le port de Naples. Revendu en 1995, il est exploit\u00e9 par <strong>Italferries<\/strong> entre Bari (Italie) et \u00c7e\u015fme (Turquie). En mai 1996, le navire est renomm\u00e9 <strong>Princess<\/strong> et affect\u00e9 \u00e0 la ligne Tarante (Italie) &#8211; Igoumen\u00edtsa (Gr\u00e8ce). Il est d\u00e9sarm\u00e9 dans le port de Tunis le 03 ao\u00fbt 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En mars 1998, il est vendu \u00e0 l&rsquo;armateur duba\u00efote <strong>Naif Marine Services<\/strong> qui le renomme <strong>Jebel Ali<\/strong>. <strong>Jebel Ali<\/strong> est engag\u00e9 sur une ligne reliant Duba\u00ef \u00e0 Umm Qasr (Irak). Une escale au Qatar est ajout\u00e9e en novembre 1999.
